How do say HAVE TO or MUST - here to describe the qualities you need to do certain jobs. If we want to talk about the qualities needed to do a certain job, there are various ways to say 'has to be' - you have met some of them already.
First way: Remember that 'hay' means 'there is' or 'there are', but 'hay que' means 'it is necessary to'. This is an impersonal expression - you can only say IT is necessary to, not I am necessary to. Therefore it can never change - easy! Para ser carpintero, hay que ser..... Look at my uses of the infinitive - in order TO BE a carpenter, it is necessary TO BE....
Second way: Use the verb 'tener' - to have. If you can't remember how to conjugate this verb, then go back to the first unit of this course for 10-15 minutes. This CAN change - Para ser pintora, tengo que ser.... Para ser pintora, tienes que ser.... Notice how 'tienes' on its own means 'you have' but 'tienes que' means 'you have to' and is followed by the infinitive of a verb.
Third way: The verb 'deber' is regular, and means 'must'. Again it is followed by an infinitive. It is NOT followed by 'que'. Para ser actor, debo ser... Para ser actiz, debes ser....
Use the different patterns used above, together with the personality adjectives from the quizlet, to write about the qualities needed for the different jobs.
Translate the following:
My mother is a gardener. She likes spending time outdoors and she loves trees and flowers. I don't want to be a gardener because it is too hot in Hong Kong and I don't want to work in the countryside.
My father is a teacher because he is very intelligent and he has a lot of patience. I can't be a teacher because I really don't like children and I don't want to work in a school.
in the future I want to be a lawyer or an actress. I like speaking in public. To be a lawyer you have to study many years and to be an actress it is necessary to be very hardworking and artistic. Both jobs are very difficult but I am ambitious.
If you found the explanations on the left quite easy, there are some other verbs which you could use before an infinitive to talk about jobs that you CAN do and jobs that you WANT to do.
Both are slightly irregular verbs - you will learn about those on the next page of this website.
PODER = to be able to (can). Puedo + infinitive = I can....
QUERER = to want Quiero + infinitive = I want to...
e.g. No quiero ser doctor porque no puedo ser simpatico todo el tiempo.
Use the many different structures and vocabulary fields on this page to create a presentation about the different jobs that people do, the qualities necessary to do them, and what you want and don't want to do in the future.
